It is rare to see actual period instruments used at reenactments because of the climate extreems. Those of us who do use them take special care to insure their safety.

Tim, do many re-enactment groups musician's care for these treasures as you and your fellows do here? Or is that need to know only? :-)

That sure is an awful nice Martin. I've never seen one that old.

They are called forage caps or bummers. They were used to collect vittles while in the field.
