Profile Information

Personal Statement or Biography

I have been fortunate to learn from a lot of excellent fiddlers, including Tommy Jarrell, Liz Carroll, Vassar Clements, Seamus Connolly, Alan Jabbour, Becky Tracy, Rachel Maloney, Byron Berline, Natalie MacMaster, Texas Shorty, Richard Greene, Buddy Spicher, and many more. This covers quite a range of styles! In fact I do play, teach, and write about multiple fiddle styles, including bluegrass, oldtime, New England, Irish, and swing. I've written several Mel Bay books, including Oldtime Fiddling Across America (with Pete Anick) and Anthology of Fiddle Styles.

Currently I play with my own Reiner Family Band in the Boston area and Granite Grass up in NH. I've been fortunate to win quite a few fiddle contests, including two Wisconsin state championships, and often lead hands-on workshops in the Northeast on bowing, fiddle styles, and fiddle repertoire. Once a year, I run Fiddle Hell Massachusetts, a nearly-free weekend of fiddle workshops and jams (see events list).

You might know of my talented sons Andy, playing fiddle and mando with Blue Moose and the Unbuttoned Zippers and with FiddleFoxx, and Eric, playing piano with Matching Orange. Great players and tune writers both!

Looking for fiddle lessons? Whether you're a fiddler looking for tunes and techniques, or a classical violinist interested in trying fiddling, I can help. I teach one day a month in Lexington, MA.

I know a lot of excellent tunes in bluegrass, oldtime, Irish, swing, and other styles. I can show you the best bowing patterns, demystify chords and theory, and help with variations, harmonies, contests, jam sessions, and playing with a band. More info on my website.
