George~these are great! I have never heard Harvest Home quite like that. It sounds nothing like what I learned last year. How plain and "un-adorned" my version is to this one! Thanks so much for sharing these with us.

Good for you Jessica! I wish I could have been there. George

Mary Margaret and Aitor, thanks for your input. I think it's true to say that the advice given novice fiddlers on vibrato is - don't attempt it; at least not for a while. Personally, I can't see what harm it will do to attempt it as long as it's not…

I came across these tunes on another site - all had originally been recorded on 78RPM and are part of the collection at 78RPMs and Cylinder Recordings, and I thought they might be of some interest to members here: Michael Coleman - Kid on the Mount…

Yes is so hard... I was disapointed this year about that. I have been playing fiddle trying to leran irish style by my self with books and videos, but there was a point where I decided to enter conservatory. Well this was my first year there, and wh…

I agree with Dave that a bit of vibrato adds a great deal to waltzes, airs and the like. Mine remains pretty pathetic but I understand that vibrato takes a long time to learn to do well. So - I work on it.

What a great site and what a great thing he's doing! I realize you posted this over 2 months ago, but it's not easy keeping track of others' blogs. I'm just surprised no one else has commented on it.

Old Irish Fiddle Tunes

I came across these tunes on another site - all had originally been recorded on 78RPM and are part of the collection at 78RPMs and Cylinder Recordings, and I thought they might be of some interest to members here:

Michael Coleman - Kid on the Mountain (October 3, 1936)

Irish Song?

I have been trying to track down a song that my grandmother used to sing. I don't know the title but the first line goes like this: "I saw her kneeling there in silent prayer by candle light". The next line is possibly: "the shadows cast a halo round her silver hair". Other words might include, "I could hear the mighty organ play", "rosary", and "mother's love."
I suspect that it is a late 19th century Irish song and that my grandmother learned the song from her father who came from Donegal, Ire… Continue

Playford's Scotch-Tunes, 1700

Henry Playford's Collection of Original Scotch-Tunes (1700) is the earliest printed collection of Scottish fiddle music, consisting of 39 dances, airs and variation sets in unaccompanied arrangements. Although it was soon reprinted in a 2nd edition (1701), both are now incredibly rare books. Nonetheless, it is with Playford's Scotch-Tunes that modern knowledge of Scottish fiddle music emerges from the obscurities of the seventeenth century aural and manuscript traditions. Today, it is a key text… Continue

Irish Music

I came across this article in The Irish Emigrant and thought it might be of interest to anyone living in the vicinity of Boston.

I truly don't know what to do, George. (Sorry, I ran out of space in my last post.)

Doesn't anyone else go through this or am I the only one who tries just about every suggestion and nothing works; you keep your chinrest up and you bow a-rockin', believing when others tell you it will happen, then a year later you're not any better and you're frustrated beyond belief and ready to give it all up?!

Honestly George, I was. I was feeling very discouraged. I am very frustrated with my left hand not relaxing. Nothing works! And I am highly critical of my so-called playing. Turns out I'm sick...lol literally! I have a nasty head cold that hit me hard last night.

Some things that opened my eyes and ears:
I couldn't resist buying a cd called "Fiddler's Hall of Fame All Time Fiddle Greats" then went to hear the acadamy students put on their Christmas performance. My bf, after watching me get all into their playing, is now insisting I'm going back to class.
Besides, what would I do with all the fiddle paraphenalia I've collected over the lat couple of years?! My Christmas tree would be plain and ugly without my sweet, little fiddling bear! :o)

thanks for the pic comment on my violin progect,it is a long term fix and is extreamely dificult ,whats realy bad is it needs new blocks for the neck and end and never had the corner blocks, retrofiting these things after the fact takes a ton of time,it also is a surpise in sound, meaning that im only going on what the pre disaster tone was by the word of a fellow jam member who gave it to me ,due to money being so tight and the fittings and supplies i use being so expensive it will be a long while b4 i get it back into service, ill put pix up when its done ,best wishes !
