Violin/Fiddle Instructor and Repair Service

Restoration, repairs and sound optimization.
Every violin / fiddle is welcome and will be treated with utmost attention and respect.
I do not distinguish between a Stradivari violin and a factory made fiddle. But results will vary due to the nature of the instrument. A cheap violin can also sound great correctly setup and fine tweaked.

Charmaine

I had the sheets for this tune probably for 20 years and never made any sense out of it. Today I Mark Lund from FHO sent me the MP3 file with Kenny Baker playing it. Boy, I love that tune. Of cause I started working on it right away.
It's gonna take a while until it comes smooth and naturally but it's fun to play.

Hardy, I have a question. I own four fiddles / violins and the finger boards are set at two quite different angles. Two are " square" to the face of the instrument. THe curve of the fingerboard "matches " the curve of the top / table /face / belly. The other two are "set" about 15' or so toward the E string. What is this called? I like the off set and want to purchase a Guarneri of the same construction but have no idea how to shop for one other than pickin up an instrument and looking at it. Thanks R/

Beautiful waltzes, Hardy, and nicely played, as well. Is that you "double tracked" on "Blue Mountain"? I could transcribe those pieces myself from your audio clips, but is there any chance of their appearing in the Transcriptions group? Hope so.

Hardy... I have a fiddle that needs a repair. It has a crack that has reopened and now a small piece of the purfling is gone. I don't want to have the top taken off if I can help it. THe crack is 1.5" long at the bottom of the table across from the chinrest just off of the foot of the bridge by the E. I'll send pics if you want what I am looking for is a recommendation on what to do. THe crack is currently closed but I imagine it will open up again soon enough. R/

Hi again Hardy, I've got a fiddle that I bought from violinslover.com, It's a Guarneri model made by Gliga. It's a workshop model but from the more expensive shop,Work shop 1. What I need is a good set up. I'm in Ft Wayne In. and don't know anyone here that could do it for me. I have been to your web site and have looked at some of your repair work and Percy has told me that you also do set up work. My questions are: what, when, where, and how much? If it is possible could you give me some information concerning a set up. Thanks for your time.

Hi again, Hardy! There are some 30 musicians in the group, but it's rare for more than 7-8 to show up on a particular night. The other venue that may be closer to you is Dick O'Dow's on Main St. in Birmingham. We (or rather some of us!) are there every Tuesday night, beginning at 8:00. Some of these are "hardy" souls who stay until god-knows-what. I usually leave Dick's at 10:30 or 11:00. If you check out the website, there are photos there (in the "Gallery") that depict who everybody is. Hope to see you sometime!

Hardy - Hi! I live in Dearborn. Welcome to the group! You may be aware of this already but we have a session group that meets in various places around the metro area. Website for the group: www.sessionite.com. There's a calendar there that shows where we go. One of the places we play is very near you - Gus O'Connor's in downtown Rochester. We're there every other Sunday from 5:30 on. We'll be there this Sunday, Feb. 8. Your playing (I was on your website) is very beautiful. Speaking for myself, you'll find me much closer to beginner status (still get squeaky strings sometimes!), but our group as a whole is pretty good. Please feel free to join us sometime. A guitar player, Nancy Green, joins us at Gus's and she lives in Leonard too. - Jeremy

Hardy,
I read your instructions for better bowing but just couldn't quite get my mind around a couple things.
3) tilt the bow about 30 degrees towards the scroll. {I'm lost here}

5) applying pressure is being done by leaning the hand (turn the hand out from the elbow, only the forearm) into the bow, the right index finger should feel the string / bow contact. {still lost}
Is there any way you know to say these same two things but in some sort of way I'll understand?
I appreciate your helpfulness. Sorry I'm so slow.
Howard
