Percy, I'm glad to hear you are getting closer to your target. I don't know if you saw my post re: Aly Bain's e-mail? Apparently he uses Prim strings( medium gauge which is the green packs.) He doesn't like the E so uses a Super flexible, made, he...
It's getting much better... I have moments where I'm almost close to getting that sweet tone. Each day I seem to become more consistent. I've also upgraded my strings to the Thomastik Infield Titaniums and started using a different rosin (Oliv Gre...
Hey, Percy! Nice to see you here. As you know, I'm also in search of the "holy grail" of sweet tone. I think I need to make a copy of your list, and tack it up in my practice space.
i am working on memorizing two O'Carolan pieces - finally (Draught and Concerto). is Fairy queen on line anywhere like the session.org or ? :) happy fiddling! tobin
And I have to add something here... I have a brazilwood bow, a CodaBow -- and Adam's fiddler's bow... and Adam's bow beats the other two hands down. If I had to recommend one, it would be his!
As a guitar player originally, I found BIAB fairly easy... entering the chords as I would play them on the guitar, then picking a style, modifying the tempo to what felt right for me, etc. Within just a few minutes, I'd have a decent backing track...
Hey Percy, sorry for the late reply! I have been traveling - The pic is of my electric violin: I got it at my local music shop, it was a no-name brand but made in the Yamaha factory. I guess Gibson and Yamaha and others also make "lesser models" and non named models and sell them through other distributors and/or brand names. After playing this for a while, I am going to stick with an amplified violin instead of a straight across electric. This fiddle was hard to hear when playing gigs (plugged or un-plugged) because it dose not produce much sound on its own... similar to electric guitar. So if my feed-back monitor was not pointed at me, or if I had to share monitors with other instruments it was a challenge. I play mostly by ear, and felt there was a lot of intonation issues with not being able to hear right away. Sorry I can't be of more help bout the fiddle. I haven't seen any like it and I have looked. If you want to go electric though, I would look for an actual violin that has been amplified, to play fiddle/ bluegrass etc. just my opinion though. hope that helps!

Wow Percy, small world indeed, I remember SLF well too.. :) , was a great band!
That whole punk scene isn't a stranger to me either, I did a fair bit of work with Shane MacGowan & the Popes, Shane came straight out of the punk scene as well (around '77, The Nipple Erectors), and with the Pogues as well as the Popes, the punk influence always remained in the attitude and approach to the music too :) ....I think your husband will certainly remember :)
