Stephen J. De Vito added a discussion to the group Violists
When I decided to take up violin last January, I rented a violin at a local music store. I got a beginners book and proceded to teach myself to read violin notation. After 2 weeks, I was thinking that my fingers were too large for violin, so I trade…

Thanks for posting this, Ron, and for the background info. I can definitely hear the Eastern Euro/ Sephardic/ Greek/ Gypsy elements. You play it with great feeling and ability. It makes me want to dance and shout..............HEY!

Stephen J. De Vito replied to Jessica's discussion 'Airs' in the group Waltzes
Hello all. I'm new to this group, and new to fiddle, and what I really love, and what drew me to fiddle was Waltz' and Airs. What they have in common (and their attraction for me) is the beautiful, lush, rich tone needed to do these tunes justice, t…

Stephen,
I'm so glad to meet you. Thank you for your kind words. You were absolutely right when you said that I care more about feel and tone than I do about technique. I always try to play from the heart, not from the mind. As a matter of fact, if I think too much while I'm playing then I just get all messed up! I just play it the way I feel it. Good technique is essential, but technique without heart is just plain empty. It's one thing to learn how to play an instrument, but it's another thing to learn how how play music. Music that moves the heart of the listener comes from the heart of one who plays it.

Take care Stephen. Please stay in touch. I look forward to getting to know you.

God bless you.

I'm living in town now and miss having a garden.
I bet you do. I grew up in the city without a garden but spent most of my adult life in rural, semi-rural or small town environments.
Now I live in a small town (about 600 inhabitants) with small gardens to front and rear. However, we are very close to one of the busiest airports in the UK and when the airplanes are taking off in a westward direction it can be very noisy.
