You can also wrap your wrist in a towel soaked in hot water. That will soothe the tendons in your wrist. A lot of self-taught fiddlers hurt themselves with poor posture. I'm not suggesting you have poor posture, but if you don't have a teacher, my…

Yonhee added a discussion to the group Bows And Bow Making
This bow looks just like any other carbon fiber violin bow, but when you pick it up, you realize there's something extra special with this one. Maybe it's the balance point? Tip is slightly heavier? Who knows. But it's good. I know the hair is the b…

I heard from Mr Sweet that you are quite the fiddler. I'm coming to Hadley to visit him and try his bows. Would love to hear you play.

It's been a long time since I answered your message (sorry). I've been away mostly for the summer. I went back to the office today and was amazed by how many new bands Adam's been in touch with. Have you checked the call list, yowzer! We've our work cut out for us this semester for sure!

Hi Yonhee,

Thanks for the note! I'm an experienced fiddle teacher and welcome new students.

I have a fairly large repertoire and a fair bit of it comes from Irish traditions, plus, I've played with a lot of fiddlers who are fluent in Irish styles. As a result, even though my own playing doesn't sound Irish, I can play and explain various elements of expression which are important in Irish fiddle styles.

About my own playing: I'm self-taught. I'm usually in tune and on time but will probably never sound like a violinist. For better or for worse, I'm usually in loud, ragged-but-right contra dance bands in which my primary job is calling the dances and my musical role is mainly playing second fiddle harmony and grinding out the beat and rhythm. Every so often, I get to play lead fiddle in a band and explore smoothness and sensitivity.

I'm pretty active in the Connecticut River Valley contra dance scene. I host periodic all-comers-band dances in Greenfield and Montague Center and a regular session (eclectic repertoire and multi-level) in Montague Center, which is where I do most of my teaching as well.
